Imagination + Action = Positive Change
Martin Luther King Jr. once said that you cannot just pray for change, but you must also walk. He meant if you want change, you can't just hope for it, you must do something about it. While teaching his elementary students, Peter Wilson used to tell students that to make a difference it wasn't good enough to just have an idea, you must also have the courage and determination to take action. ImaginAction originated out of that same thought process. The organization was formed to run the Pacific Northwest Program.
Before becoming a teacher, Peter worked in the corporate world and traveled to many national parks for pleasure and photography. As he made his way into teacher certification, Peter dreamed of sharing his passion for travel with future students - he knew students could learn so much outside of the classroom and wanted them to experience places, not just see them on television or in movies. In a moment of serendipity, through Dr. Corey Thompson of Cardinal Stritch University, he was blessed to land the student-teaching position with Mr. Mark Horowitz at Golda Meir School in Milwaukee, WI. Mr. Horowitz was known for taking his fourth grade students to Copenhagen, Denmark and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Thus, Peter had the chance to experience taking kids on longer trips. Yes, they took about 30 students across the Atlantic! The growth and maturity of these fortunate students was very evident.
While in his first full-time teaching assignment at the Racine Montessori School, Peter decided to take his students to places outside the classroom - places like the Wisconsin Maritime Museum to stay overnight on a WWII submarine and to Springfield, IL to visit Abraham Lincoln sites. Following up on these trips, his vision was to take students even farther away by traveling to Olympic National Park, near Seattle, WA. All of the photos on this site are from trips to Olympic NP. After moving to Milwaukee for a new teaching position that didn't lend itself to student trips, Peter decided to create a new summer school program to take students to Olympic NP. He believed in the benefits of the trip that much! That new program is called the Pacific Northwest Program; it is a 3-4 week local program, along with a week-long trip, for students just out of fifth grade. See the Pacific Northwest Program link for more detailed information. Although the Pacific Northwest Program is the initial program, ImaginAction will create other programs in the future.
